Please note, at all the seminars, there will be a 45-minute lunch break at about 12 noon, and another 45-minute supper break at about 6:00 pm.  There will also be additional 5 or 10-minute breaks throughout the seminar.  It is a good idea to bring your own food and drink as there is not much open on campus on the weekend.

Seminar 1:  Calculus for Management Volume 1

The Calculus for Management Midterm Exam Prep Seminar is designed to prepare students taking the MATH 1520 course for the midterm exam they will be writing on Feb. 29, 2012. This is actually the seminar for students taking Math 1500, but all of the topics covered are also on the Math 1520 exam.  Grant will be covering Lessons 4 to 7 in his study book (these are all lessons relevant to the midterm exam). In addition, all Math 1520 students who attend the seminar will be sent audio files teaching Lessons 2 and 3 (over 6 hours of audio lectures).

Specifically, that means Grant will be teaching:
Lesson 1: Review
Lesson 2: Cost & Revenue, Demand & Supply
(Lesson 2 is taught strictly by Audio Lecture; it will not be taught live at the seminar.)
Lesson 3: Logs and Exponentials including Interest and Exponential Growth & Decay Word Problems
(Lesson 3 is taught strictly by Audio Lecture; it will not be taught live at the seminar.)
Lesson 4: Limits
Lesson 5: Continuity
Lesson 6: Definition of Derivative
Lesson 7: Differentiation Rules

This material will not be covered again at Grant's final exam seminar, so those of you taking the course by distance education may also be interested in taking this opportunity to review these lessons even though you have no midterm.

If you have a recent edition of Grant's Calculus for Management Study Book (either the complete book or at least Volume 1), be sure to bring it to the seminar.  Grant is teaching from the September 2011 edition (white cover), but those of you with older books (blue or green covers) should be able to follow along all right.

You are still welcome to come along no matter what book you have, if you have one at all, but be sure to download a copy of Grant's Calculus for Management Midterm Seminar Handout to see the questions he will be discussing.  Come prepared to write a lot of notes though.  If you would like to purchase a copy of Grant's book (no obligation to do so), you can either order one to pick up at UMSU Digital Copy Centre, room 118 University Centre, or you can arrange to have Grant provide you with one at the seminar.  Of course, you will have to pay the list price for the book ($45 + tax) on top of the $40 seminar price.

Please download this handout and bring a copy to the seminar if you do not have Grant's study book.  You should also compare this handout to your book if you have an older edition to ascertain if you think your book is adequate for the seminar.

Seminar 2:  Calculus for Management Volume 2

The Calculus for Management Final Exam Prep Seminar is designed to prepare students taking the MATH 1520 course for the final exam they will be writing in April, 2012. Grant will be covering Lessons 8 to 11 in his study book (these are the lessons most relevant to the final exam). In addition, Math 1520 students attending the seminar will be sent audio lectures teaching Lesson 12 as well as additional examples from the other lessons.

Specifically, that means Grant will be teaching:
Lesson 8: Derivatives of Logs and Exponentials
Lesson 9: Curve-Sketching
Lesson 10: Max/Min Word Problems
Lesson 11: Antiderivatives and Integrals
Lesson 12: Partial Derivatives
(Lesson 12 is taught strictly by Audio Lecture; it will not be taught live at the seminar.)

There simply is not time to go over the topics covered in Volume 1 of Grant's book also, other than how they apply to the topics in Volume 2.  Students are responsible for reviewing those topics on their own and are encouraged to attend the first seminar where Grant teaches Volume 1 in detail.

If you have a recent edition of Grant's Intro Calculus Study Book (either the complete book or at least Volume 2), be sure to bring it to the seminar.  Grant is teaching from the September 2011 edition (white cover), but those of you with older books (blue or green covers) should be able to follow along all right.

You are still welcome to come along no matter what book you have, if you have one at all, but be sure to download a copy of Grant's Calculus for Management Final Seminar Handout to see the questions he will be discussing.
